本書はカンザスシティの使われなくなった温室の中で見つかった、園芸・農業に関する百科事典から引用された一冊。2011年にその本を見つけた著者は、農業というそれまで彼女にとって未知であった分野を、偶然的なきっかけで知ることとなった。探究へのプロセスを大事にし、この分野にのめり込んだ彼女は、自分と同じよう、多くの人のキッカケとなってほしいという思いから本書を制作した。
